Ethan’s Teaching Philosophy
Ethan takes a practical approach to teaching voice. He pulls from his own experience with opera, musical theater, jazz, choral music, sacred music and glee club. Ethan teaches a universal singing technique that can be applied to any style or genre, well-grounded in the Old Italian School and contemporary voice science. Work with the breath, language, and internal physical sensation will allow each student to let their own unique voice speak for itself uninhibited. The best singing technique allows the singer to just "get out of the way,” prioritizing vocal freedom and an honest sound . This is the key to vocal ease, clarity, beauty and longevity.
In addition to work of a purely vocal nature, Ethan also pushes his students to develop their expression through story-telling. Work with the words, rhetorical inflection, verbal expression, and physical gesture are all techniques that Ethan holds in his teaching arsenal. Quite often some simple dramatic work on its own will make an aria, song or show-tune sing easier and more naturally. Ethan has studied the voice himself now for more than eight years and is actively working in Germany as an opera singer.
In addition to his practical knowledge, Ethan is well versed in the fundamentals of voice science and vocal pedagogy. Ethan holds a Masters of Music in Voice and Opera from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Ethan also has a Bachelors of Music in Voice Performance from the University of Delaware, a nationally renowned American school for Music Education. He currently studies with Franco Farina.
Ethan has seven years of teaching experience, including:
2 Years at IU Jacobs School of Music as an Associate Instructor in Voice, teaching undergraduate and graduate secondary voice, about 6 students per week during the school term.
2 years as a freelance teacher with students as young as 5 and as old as 72.
1 year of teaching practicum while studying vocal pedagogy.
